fred hersch : jazz educator

   Since 1980, when he first joined the faculty of The New England Conservatory as its piano instructor in the Jazz Studies Department, Fred Hersch has been involved in the education of young musicians.  He has taught theory, the art of accompaniment, private piano students and the piano master class at The New School Jazz Program in New York City; he has also served on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music.  He is pleased to number some of the world's finest young pianists among his current and former students.
   He has given seminars and master classes at The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, The Manhattan School of Music, Western Michigan University, The Eastman School of Music, The University of North Texas, The Royal College of Music in London, The Amsterdam Conservatory, California Institute of the Arts and many other institutions.  He wrote a monthly column on the art of solo piano for Keyboard magazine from 1995-98.  He was awarded the Branigan Lectureship at Indiana University in 2004.  He is currently a Visiting Professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and has rejoined the Jazz Studies faculty at The New England Conservatory.
